* AVI INTERNATIONAL BRIEF NEWS *
SUMMER 2006
A simple history of yurt
One of our insured went on a trip and chose our PLAN MARCO POLO coverage.
He ended up in Mongolia together with other globe-trotters and was invited to stay for the night with a Mogolian family in their yurt. They had dinner together, and then, to put out the fire, while water would have been enough, they accidentaly poured a flammable liquid over the fire.
The yurt still on fire, the police immediately arrived on the scene and the AVI Third Party Liability coverage prevented our insured from paying for the damages he caused.
International SOS, our insurance carrier, paid the compensation due to the Mongolian family.
A mere mishap which could have gone "badly" wrong if our insured had no insurance COVERAGE, and no Third Party Liability in particular.

Some admission rights into hospital !
A couple was travelling in Quebec with our insurance "PLAN MARCO POLO". The young lady was victim of a car accident : she was run over by a taxi.
She went to the Emergency room and had to pay some "admission rights" of $500 due for people not insured by the Canadian Social Security on the spot. She called International SOS Assistance, did not have to make any payment and all her medical expenses were taken care of.> Read the comments on AVI coverage on ciao.fr

CAR RENTAL BEWARE!
If you rent a car, when you return it, try to do it during office hours. Most rental contracts make the renter liable for all damages to the car if it was returned to the lot after office hours. In the case of damages to the car or if it were stolen your credit card would be charged of the deposit or of the deductible.
There is a British police investigation over a 150,000 euros scam on false damages to vehicles that were all returned after office hours of the rental agency.
Using your VISA Premier ? Some, depending on your country of residence, include Collision Damage Waiver. However some cars are excluded. Of course this is the case for luxury cars such as Bentley but also sports cars Ferrari, Porsche, but also for SUV and 4x4.
Included in those 4x4 are small Suzuki jeeps or Toyota Rav 4 which are often rented for their trunk load which often is bigger than that of a sedan.
For luxury cars, check things out as you may be surprised. If you want to rent a Cadillac or any other vehicle excluded from the VISA Premier CDW benefit, take the optional CDW from the rental company. |

LOST LUGGAGE |
 |
According to a study by SITA a provider for airline bagage handling in 2006, 30 millions bags will be mishandled, delayed or lost.
This is mainly due to airport congestion, tight turn around times, security regulation and rising bagage volume.
From another study by Legal and General a UK insurance company, 52% of travelers under estimate the value of their belongings, 23% have no idea !
A third study from the USA this time, according to the US Association of Travel Insurers only 30% of all travelers have luggage insurance.
Before departure : sort out all bills and receipts and warranties for the belongings you take with you on vacation.
Make copies you will take on your trip in your hand bag and leave the originals at home.
Make sure your luggage each got a tag, in addition you can tie around the handle some sort of distinctive mark such as a ribbon, put a sticker of your favorite team on your hard bags.
Remember most bags are black or dark blue and many people in good faith pick up a bag on the belt which is not theirs.
In the case of delayed or lost luggage : immediately report to the airline. Traveling with a group ? They will wait for you ! Remember if you do not report immediately to the airline, the airline will refuse your claim leaving you without proof of your lost bag.
Of course your insurance company will deny your claim as the airline itself, which was the one involved with your lost bag who denied it in the first place !
Stolen property : report immediately to the police.
In all cases when you are asked to describe the content of your bag be as precise as possible (remember you have copies of your bills) so that your file is well prepared.
Imagine what will think your insurance company claims administrator if in your report to the airline or to the police there was one camera in your missing bag and in your insurance description there is an additional MP3 player, a second camera, a lap top, etc.
You are insured with AVI ? Check if your luggage insurance is included in your contract or if you bought the option.
Have a safe trip !
